Restaurants and bars are very limited and are open at certain times only, have to be booked in advance or close out of the tourist season, so please call them to see if they are open before you go. Some food can be ordered if you ask a local person and real Barbudan specialities like land turtle, deer meat, crabs and conchs are only available at certain times and harder to find, so if you are there at the right time at a food fair or event - you are in luck. Fresh caught fish depends on good sea-faring weather and is often sold on the street. Most Barbudan food is sold early in the day and gone by the afternoon so don't miss out by looking too late, or buy it early and save it for later.

transport on Barbuda Article Count: 2
Hiring a car on Barbuda can be difficult; repairing vehicles without access to spare parts and bad roads make for an expensive business for Barbudans so things sometimes go wrong that can't be fixed immediately. On an older car check the brakes, windows, a/c and fwd all work before you go out but don't always expect international standards.
You must buy a local licence (EC$50) which can be bought in Barbuda from the Ginnery office Monday to Friday. Your international licence does not cover you to drive here but if the office is closed you may drive, as long as you buy one at the earliest opportunity. On Barbuda we sometimes have delays with the import of petrol/gas/diesel so visit the service station and check their supply to make sure you can fill up early during your stay if you need to.
Taxis are a very good way to find out about the island because you get a friendly guide as well. The taxi hire charges are set by Barbuda Council and drivers are happy to show you the price list. If you arrive at the airport or the wharf there will usually be a taxi there to take you where you need to go, just look for a tx number plate or ask someone local. Our taxi and tours page lists some of the taxi drivers and also lists friendly and expert tour guides who can accompany you on your visit if you hire a car. They are important if you want to see some of the caves and wildlife such as deer, and other off-the-beaten-track parts of Barbuda.
Some of the hotels in Antigua do day tours to Barbuda and the Barbuda Ferry also offers this service if you wish to see part of the island in a day.
Not everyone on Barbuda has instant access to last minute e-mail, so please phone ahead and book where possible. Bikes, kayaks, horses and even donkeys are another option and bike hire is included here.
