barbudaful sports

Sport is very popular in Barbuda, it is promoted in school from an early age and in the community by the Barbuda Council, with many opportunities for organised sports such as basketball, cricket, horse-racing and athletics. Barbudans have achieved great success throughout the world when given the opportunity - limited only by the cost of travel and training facilities on the island.

There is a popular village tennis court. The pictures above show the recently added changing facilities and accommodation for the basketball and tennis courts. Some visitors bring kite surfing and other sea boards to Barbuda from time to time and kayaks are on offer at the hotels, or might be hired in the village if available. Barbuda has great sport fishing with regular fishing tournaments and some of the best bone fishing in the Caribbean. You can also go horse or donkey riding - just ask someone on a horse or a donkey!

The basketball season on Barbuda starts in August. There are six teams - Vipers, Young Warriors, Rockers, Flip-mo, Boars and Vikings. It's a league table format in which every team play each other three times; four top teams go to playoff, they play each other; the top two teams go to a playoff and then the final.

Fishing

Barbuda is well known for it's fishing and has several fishing tournaments in the village and at Coco Point. There is some of the best bone-fishing in the Caribbean in these waters, particularly because of the lagoon, one of the largest in the Eastern Caribbean.
