Old school v new school

A basketball tournament with a difference took place on Saturday - the older school players from the 1980s and 1990s versus the younger ones of today. The tournament was the idea of Craig Thomas, who lives in the Bronx and was coming to spend Christmas and New Year in Barbuda. Craig provided gold and silver medals, trophies for the MVP and the winning team.
Two old school teams featured Fabian, Craig, Godfrey, Cali, Persil, Gregory (see photo), Roy, Venkat, Tony, Stetson, Shey, and Shane. Two new school teams included Orlando, Zachary, Emilio, Emerick, Alan, Maverick, Archimore, Eldene, Jerez, and Andrea. The four teams played each other once and the two best met in the final. A new school team beat the veterans for the winners' trophy, while Emilio John received the MVP trophy. The players presented a plaque to Calvin Gore in appreciation of his years of dedication and support for basketball in Barbuda. Craig hopes that the tournament will become an annual event.

Rotary Christmas party

The Rotary Club of Antigua and Barbuda held a Christmas party for 240 children at the Holy Trinity School. The club provided refreshments for the children, together with entertainment by Calypso Joe and a present from Santa Claus. The party was made possible by the support of the representative Trevor Walker, the Barbuda Council, and the principal and staff of HTS. Carib Aviation gave discounted fares for the club, the Government waived import duties and taxes on the presents, which were transported to Barbuda by the Coastguard. An enjoyable way to begin the festive season.

Class of 2006 graduate from SMGSS

The Class of 2006 were the first graduates of the Sir McChesney George Secondary School on Wednesday. Caron Weston, the Maths Co-ordinator/Supervisor at the Ministry of Education, gave the Charge to the Graduates. The ten graduates (pictured below) are Cordette Beazer, Jené Beazer, Jeremy Deazle, Nelia Deazle, Victor Harris, Sabesha James, Crystal Jeffrey, Aldorn Lee, Relton Lynch, and Lorenzo Taylor. Lorenzo was named Valedictorian.
Nelia, Aldorn, and Relton are studying at State College in Antigua; Nelia in the A Level Department and Aldorn and Relton in engineering. Cordette and Sabesha are attending the Antigua and Barbuda Institute of Information Technology. Victor and Lorenzo are in Guyana taking agriculture courses, while Jeremy is training to be a doctor in Cuba. Jené works in the office of Public Works and Crystal is employed at the Hanna Thomas Hospital in Barbuda.

Jicky receives national honour

Congratulations to Ordrick Samuel, better known to everyone as Jicky or Montgomery. He became a Member of the Most Precious Order of Princely Heritage - MH for Community Service at the Independence Awards Ceremony in the Antigua Recreation Ground. Jicky, smartly attired in a white suit and black hat, was given his award by the Governor General, Sir James Carlisle.

Independence Silver Jubilee - Barbuda

Barbudan teachers Cedric Beazer, Adosha John, and Victoria James were honoured at the annual Independence Flag Raising Ceremony. The teachers were presented with mahogany plaques by Maxine Walker to commemorate over 33 years of service at the Holy Trinity School. The ceremony was attended by Barbuda's parliamentary representative, Trevor Walker, and his wife, Maxine. The Royal Antigua and Barbuda Police Force and students from HTS and SMGSS provided a march past. The Independence Committee prepared refreshments for those attending the ceremony.

Independence Silver Jubilee - Toronto

In commemoration of the 25th year anniversary of Independence the Consulate General of Antigua and Barbuda will present a cultural and historical exhibition in Toronto, Canada. Tamara Huggins, a Barbudan who is chairing the organising committee, is looking for artifacts, photographs, memorabilia and other items that will best encapsulate the history and spirit of Antigua and Barbuda in arts and culture, politics, economics, sports, and other fields. The exhibition will chronicle Antigua and Barbuda's heritage from Emancipation, to Independence, to the Antigua and Barbuda of the twenty-first century.
Tamara Huggins says that the event will allow Antiguans and Barbudans overseas to share in the experiences of their heritage and enable people from other communities to learn that we are more than two islands of sun and sand, but have a rich history, profound stories, and a promising future. Barbuda Street Naming Ceremony

The Barbuda Planning Commission (BPC) hopes that all streets in the village will be named by 30 September 2006 with a public naming ceremony planned for Friday 6 October 2006. This project is directed by the BPC in collaboration with other government departments in Antigua and Barbuda. The first phase of the project aims to name the streets within Codrington Village, while subsequent phases will focus on naming streets on the outskirts of Codrington.
Barbudans at home and abroad are invited to participate in this historical event. Read the guidelines for choosing and submitting your street names.

First anniversary for SMGSS

A noted past principal of Holy Trinity School, Eusalyn Lewis, gave the feature address at the First Anniversary and Prizegiving Ceremony of Sir McChesney George Secondary School. Remarks were also made by Trevor Walker, Jacinta Pringle (Chief Education Officer), and Cynthia Shoy (Board of Education). Prizes were awarded to the following students for academic performance in 2005-2006.

Eusalyn Lewis awarded special prizes to Sherese Fortune as the most improved home economics student and to Rhoda Nedd as the most outstanding art student. Trevor Walker presented badges to the prefects, who are Jody Beazer, Sharima Deazle, Sherese Fortune, Maurice George, Joy Greenaway, Justin Griffin, Rawl Hopkins, Jahmeel Jones, and Knacyntar Nedd.
